Handmade photography

In addition to being a woodworker I have been a professional photographer for 20+ years. I combine my two loves by printing, mounting and framing my work. Every frame is handmade and unique and is an elegant addition to any room. Wood blocks come in 5”, 10” and 15” depending on the series come ready to hang with a signed label.

No AI is ever used in the creation of any of my images. All are the result of my years of travel as a professional filmmaker and photographer while on assignment.

All the botanicals in this series are native to the American mountain west. The live plants are in color and the dead ones are in black and white which gives them an almost graphite pencil rendering quality. In fact, people frequently ask if they’re pencil drawings. They’re all foraged and photographed in studio and lit to highlight their natural beauty. I began photographing the dead plants because they’re passed by and ignored for half the year, but when presented in focus they still contain a lot of beauty and are worthy of attention.

  • 6 degrees from solitude

    Taken at first light after fresh snow crunching under my boots. The title was simply named because it was 6 degrees and on the other side of this peak is Solitude ski resort. However, the peace and self reflection gained on a mountain, in early morning cold solitude is very meaningful.

    Wall Street in Arches National Park. I spontaneously visited around midnight and I wasn’t able to actually see the wall. I set my camera on the ground and used my wallet is an impromptu support and a 40 second exposure revealed an incredible scene.

    While walking Cannon beach in November it was absent of people, but the seagulls were having a great time.

    On Cannon beach there’s a path cut into a steep hill that perfectly hides the homes behind it. The weather can often have a foreboding sensibility which creates a mistique for those with a wild imagination.

  • searching through it all

    Dedicated to those who have battled through serious challenges. The mist can obscure your view, the wind can whip and the hill is steep. But you can get to the other side.

    Cannon beach and haystack rock. Titled after a lyric in “The Coast” by Noah Gunderson. “Bury my ghost, down on the coast with an ocean view”.

    A tree above Moanalua Vally on Oahu. I was able to make this 7 hour hike after a long rehab of a back injury and so this image means a lot to me. This view no longer exists as it has been roped off.

  • the shepherd

    While hiking to a waterfall on Kauai I poked my head through a wall of vines and saw this scene. Though small in the frame, there is a shepherd walking out to collect his goats at the end of the day.

    While touring around Kauai I happened across this ranch gate which I thought looked really cool. There’s a W brand in the middle of the sign which, I assume, is silent in the pronunciation.
